Cospicua (Bormla) has a population of circa 6500. It is the largest of the Cottonera Three Cities and is surrounded by fortification. Originally a fishing village it's importance increased with the arrival of the Knights of ST . John. When the knights moved to the new city 'Valletta'. The Port of Cospicua had docks constructed and became a leading docking centre for ship repair aspecially during the second world war. Before the second World War , Cospicua was different from today. Bormla from Bir-Mula: The well of the Lord. In1722 Grand master Zondadari declared it a city and in view of its strong bastions named it Citta Cospicua. In 1776 the Order of St. John started to construct a dock. This was the turning point in Cospicua's history, as from then on Cospicua became known for its docks.
